Today was our first day of vacation. It is amazing all that I took in today both emotionally and visually. One of the most interesting parts of my day was our experiences on the beach. My children are very different as most children are. My son is very light complected, gets overheated easily and would really rather play video games inside than to play outside in the summer heat. My daughter on the other hand is just like me. She has never met a summer day she can’t dominate and she is willing to get her hands dirty anytime the opportunity presents itself. Here is where things get weird. When we arrived at the beach I could not get my son out of the water and my daughter couldn’t get back to the room quick enough. We came back and napped then tried again. She did better the second time but my son did GREAT!!! He even took a boogie board out and needed absolutely no instruction on how to maneuver it. The passion for the ocean runs deep in his blood!! He will be surfing before he reaches his teenage years. I saw it in his eyes today!! It nearly brought me to tears of joy!
What does all that mean and why am I telling you this?? I found it very interesting that these two little people were so unpredictable in a situation that I was 100% sure how they would react. What was even more interesting to me though is that it reminded me of something very important in life– Never get comfortable in the idea of ever truly understanding something as complicated as human nature. People are not predictable and as soon as we start treating them as if they are we fail to learn and understand one another. Life is complicated and our reactions to life are even more so complicated!! It has been a wonderful day. I learned a lot about my children today! But even more so about myself!
